laptop battery :(

I have a few questions about my laptop, particularly the battery.
Today my battery had a "fatal error" or something like that, and now says that I need to replace it.  First of all, can I still use my laptop while it's plugged in now?  If it's plugged in, will it still run from power from the cord instead of what little battery life it has left?

A few questions about my borked battery:
I don't know a whole lot about computers (enough to use them and look like I know what I'm doing but not much more than that), so please don't yell at me if I made some stupid beginner error or something
Anyways, I recently replaced the charging cord.  Our puppy chewed through the first one, which was a three prong, and the second one I bought on amazon and it was only a two prong.  it worked really great, same as the other.
Since it was a two prong, I decided to use an extention cord.  not a heavy duty one...like I said, it was a two prong and I only had a two prong extention cord.
I am wondering if the battery dying has been caused by my own stupidity...In which case I'd like to correct any retardation from occuring in the future, so if you think that something I did was the cause, please let me know, thanks
The laptop is a year and a half old, and it's a dell inspiron if that makes any difference.

I don't exactly take excellent care of my laptop...I have a 3 year old and sometimes i have to abruptly stop using the lappy and set it down anywhere that is closest, and sometimes that is in a pile of clothes. then i'll pick the laptop back up after a half an hour or whatever and it's warm :(. not hot, but warmer than it should be sitting closed and in sleep mode.
so if the battery's life was just at it's normal end, i'm cool with that. I will compare the boxes of the old cord and the new cord (i hope i didn't toss out the old cord...) to make sure that the problem isn't there.
and i promise to take better care of my laptop now :)
